” Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred, (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar)…. ” { Qura’an 9:36}

Important dates:
* Last day of Dhil Hajj: Saturday 26th November 2011
* 1st day of day of al-Muharram. : Sunday 27th of November 2011
* 9th day day of al-Muharram : Monday 5th of December 2011
* 10th day of al-Muharram: Tuesday 6th of December 2011
* Thursday, Friday and Saturday of al-Muharram: 1st, 2nd and 3rd December 2011 respectively

*** Try to Fast any of any of the above dates , if not all of them insha-Allah. ****

1. On the authority of Abu Hurairah: The Prophet , peace be upon him , said: “The best time to fast after Ramadan is in the month of Allah known to you as al-Muharram and the best type of prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night vigil.” { Muslim } . Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali states : this Hadith is explicit in regards to the supererogatory fasts of the month of God al-Muharram being the best after the fast of Ramadan.

2. A man came to the Prophet , peace be upon him, and said: “O Messenger of God, tell me what month I should fast in other than Ramadan?” The Messenger of God replied, “If you desire to fast for an entire month in addition to Ramadan then fast the month of al-Muharram as it is the month of Allah , a month in which Allah accepted the repentance of certain folk and in which he accepts the repentance of others ” { Narrated by Ali ibn abi Talib, recorded by al-Imam Ahmad in his and al-Tirmidhi in his }

3. On the authority of ibn `Abbas , may Allah be pleased with them : The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) observed Saum (fasting) on the day of `Ashura’ and commanded us to fast on this day. { Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Al Imam Nawawi said in his book that Ashura’ is the 10th day of the month al-Muharram.

4. On the authority of abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) : : The Messenger of Allah , peace be upon him, was asked about observing As-Saum (the fast) on the tenth day of Muharram, and he replied, “It is an expiation for the sins of the preceding year.” {Muslim, an Nawawi}

5. On the authority of ibn `Abbas , may Allah be pleased with them : The Messenger of Allah , peace be upon him , said: “If I remain alive till the next year, I shall also observe fast on the ninth of Muharram.” {Muslim, Mujamma` Az-Zawaid of by ibn Hajar al Haytami and Mususnad of Imam ahmed ibn Hanbal}

6. . The prophet, peace be upon him, said: ” Whoever fasts on the final day of Dhul-Hijjah and on the first day of al-Muharram then God will make it an expiation for him for fifty years and fasting one day in al-Muharram is the equal of fasting for thirty days ” { Narrated by Hafsah, recorded by al Hafith ibn Hajr al-‘Asqalani }

7. . Imam Al-Ghazali, Proof of Islam , reviver of the Islamic of Islamic religion of 7th century, related in his book “Ihya” that Prophet Muhamed peace be upon him said: “Whoever fasts three days in the month of al-Muharram, being Thursday, Friday and Saturday , Allah will decree for him the reward of seventy years worship.” { narrated by Anas ibn Maalik, recorded by al-Alzdi}

8. . Abu ‘Uthman al-Nahdi said: “They ( pious ) used to venerate three sets of tens: The last ten nights of Ramadan, the first ten days of Dhul- Hijjah and the first ten days of al-Muharram.”
